Two tools, two jobs

Shotcut versus this cutter is a job split, not a ranking. Shotcut is a timeline editor with effects. LosslessCut copies bitstreams. People type both names when they want to drop a few seconds. One of those jobs is an NLE. The other is a lossless segment export. Related: guides, home, versus HandBrake, move off re-encoders.

Official cutter files stay on GitHub Releases. Product homepage for the cutter: losslesscut.app. License: GPL-2.0. Shotcut files stay on that project’s own site: shotcut.org.

Shotcut is a full NLE

Shotcut markets itself as a cross-platform editor. You stack clips, add filters, mix audio, and export an encode. That is the right job when the work is a video with titles or effects. A lossless cutter will not replace that pipeline. Do not expect LosslessCut to open a Shotcut project. The README does not document that import, and this guide does not invent a converter.

Keep Shotcut when the work is a timeline all day. Read Shotcut docs for that product. Premiere is still a different NLE. FAQ and issue 976 say LosslessCut is not Premiere and not an NLE.

A Shotcut project stores a timeline with filters and a mix. LosslessCut stores .llc marks next to a media file. Those two files are not interchangeable. Finish a Shotcut story in Shotcut. Cut a camera original in LosslessCut before you import a short file into Shotcut if the story still needs titles. That order keeps the discarded head and tail off the NLE encoder.

This cutter exports segments

LosslessCut places segments on a timeline and exports those portions. Default cut is keyframe-aligned codec copy. Extra frames can remain at the in-point. Smart cut is experimental. Read smart cut and keyframe cuts. Merge two camera files: merge segments. Crop honesty: README lists lossless crop; FAQ still groups crop, resize, and stretch with lossy work and points at issue 372. Crop URL: video cropper.

FFmpeg CLI already does the same -c copy idea with no GUI. The GUI is in and out points and preview. Avidemux is a closer cousin than Shotcut and still often re-encodes for filters. HandBrake is compress, not a timeline: versus HandBrake.

CapCut is a closed consumer editor, not an open NLE. Move notes: switch from re-encode editors.

People who only wanted to drop a few seconds from a camera file do not need an NLE. They need in and out points. Shotcut remains the right tool when those seconds also need titles or a mix.

When to keep Shotcut

Keep Shotcut when the work is filters, titles, a mix, or a multi-clip story. If you already have a Shotcut project, finish it there. A lossless cutter will not open that project. Export a file from Shotcut only if you then need a lossless trim of that export, which is usually the wrong order. Cut camera files first, then edit the short result in Shotcut if effects remain.

When to cut first

Switch the first step to LosslessCut when you only want in and out points, a merge of two camera files, or a keyframe cut without filters. Re-record nothing. Open the file. Mark segments. Export. Cleanup extra unsigned helpers after the official GitHub install. Safe fetch: download safely. This computer: this computer. 7z versus store: 7z or store.

Windows: take LosslessCut-win-x64.7z and extract with 7-Zip. macOS: mount the matching dmg. Linux: take the GitHub AppImage or tar. Snap is a supporting store path. APPX and PKG do not work as manual downloads. GitHub stays free. Store listings lag. Notes skip inventing a dollar amount.

License, local files, and later timelines

GPL-2.0 source stays on GitHub. Building from source is optional. Settings live in %APPDATA%\LosslessCut, ~/Library/Application Support/LosslessCut, or ~/.config/LosslessCut. .llc files sit next to the media unless you turn them off. No account on the GitHub build. Cuts stay local. Issues: lossless-cut issues. Docs: docs/index.md. Editorial: editorial policy. About: about.

Trim, cut, and mp4 keep URLs stay indexed: trim video, video cutter, mp4 trimmer. Guides index: guides. Home: video trimmer home. Install walks: Windows, macOS, Linux.

Audio seams, containers, and later timelines

A codec-copy export keeps the bitstream. If audio skips at the cut, that is a known codec-copy seam, not a missing Shotcut filter. Smart cut tries to hide a seam by re-encoding a small part and is still experimental. Read smart cut before you treat a skip as an NLE problem.

Keep the original camera file until the export plays. Then decide whether Shotcut still has a job. Install the cutter from GitHub, then keep Shotcut for the effects timeline you still need. That is the whole split. Notes skip a rank. Notes skip a best title. Related cluster: guides.

Keep Shotcut for titles and filters. Cut the camera file first so discarded minutes never hit that timeline.

Frequently asked questions

Can it replace Premiere?

LosslessCut cannot. FAQ and issue 976 say it is not an NLE. Shotcut is closer to that job. Related: versus HandBrake.

Does Shotcut re-encode?

Shotcut is a timeline editor with effects. It re-encodes. LosslessCut default export is codec copy.

Can I open a Shotcut project in the cutter?

No documented importer. Export media from Shotcut if you need a file, then cut that file locally.

When should I keep Shotcut?

Keep it for effects, titles, and a mix. Use LosslessCut for lossless in and out points. Guide: guides.

Where do I install the cutter?

GitHub 7z, dmg, or AppImage. Walks: Windows, macOS, Linux.
