The job is the frame you see, not the clock. A black bar on the left. A letterbox strip. A camera that caught too much desk. Video cropper keeps the rectangle that matters and drops the edges. Time stays the same unless you also trim. If you only need to cut the start or end, that work sits on Trim video. This is LosslessCut. Mikael Finstad (mifi) publishes it under GPL-2.0. We did not make it. Official files live on GitHub Releases. The repo is mifi/lossless-cut. This site does not host the file. Skip Softonic, CNET, and unofficial sites that wrap the name. The README lists lossless crop and aspect ratio modification. That is the crop job here: picture edges, not a re-encode for blur, watermark, GIF, or color grade. Those are different tools.

Install so video cropper actually runs

There is no winget command. The author does not maintain one. WinGet and Homebrew packs that show up elsewhere are unofficial. Do not invent an id. Copy the Windows filename from the box on this page:

How to use a video cropper on the desktop

  1. Open GitHub Releases, take LosslessCut-win-x64.7z, extract with 7-Zip, and run LosslessCut.exe.
  2. Open the video you already have. Drag the file into the player, or press Ctrl+O and pick it. Wait until the timeline and preview load.
  3. Click advanced view. The baby icon in the bottom left unlocks extra controls. Crop and tracks live in that wider set of tools. If a button seems missing, unlock advanced view first.
  4. Open crop on the video track. Set the crop rectangle with the edge values (left, right, top, bottom) so the kept picture matches what you want. Aspect ratio can sit next to that when you need a different display ratio without changing the time range.
  5. Export. Press Export (or E), check the overview, then confirm. The original file is not modified. A new file lands next to the source, or in the working directory you set.

That list is the crop path. You are editing the picture box. You are not deleting minutes from the middle. You are not writing a GIF. You are not adding a watermark.

Crop is the picture, trim is time

People mix the words. Crop pulls in the sides of the frame. Trim shortens the clock. A video cropper answers: which pixels stay on screen. A trim answers: which seconds stay in the file. You can do both in one project if you need to, but this page stays on the rectangle. If you came here because a title bar or a webcam sidebar is in the shot, crop. If you came here because the take starts late or ends late, go to Trim video.

Lossless crop here means the export can keep quality by writing crop metadata or a bitstream filter path instead of cooking every frame into a new encode for effects. Still play the result once. Some players read crop metadata cleanly. Some do not. If a player ignores the crop flag, try another player, or remux, before you assume the export failed. That check is part of the job.

Aspect ratio modification is listed with crop in the project README. That changes how the picture is meant to be displayed. It is still not a time cut. Keep aspect work next to crop when the frame looks stretched or squeezed after you change edges. Do not treat aspect as a substitute for trimming commercials.

Advanced view, tracks, and the crop rectangle

Basic view hides a lot of buttons on purpose. The baby icon is the switch. Click it once so the UI shows the fuller set. Tracks open the list of video, audio, and subtitle streams. Crop for the picture sits on the video track you want to change. Open that track menu, find the crop fields, and type the edges that define the rectangle you keep.

Left and right remove width. Top and bottom remove height. Start small if you are unsure. Export a short test if the file is huge. A camera that filmed a 16:9 desk with unused side panels often needs left and right only. A phone clip with a status bar at the top often needs top only. Write the numbers, glance at the preview if the UI shows one, then Export.

If you cannot find crop, confirm advanced view is on. Confirm you are on the video track, not an audio track. Confirm you opened a real media file, not an empty project. The keyboard shortcut dialog (Shift+/) lists many keys. Crop is a track setting more than a timeline key like I or O.

What this video cropper will not do

It will not blur a face. It will not stamp a watermark. It will not resize into a new pixel grid the way a lossy editor does when you ask for a 720p re-encode. It will not turn the clip into a GIF. It will not color grade. The project FAQ is blunt about many lossy effects. Stay on crop and aspect for this page. If you need those other jobs, use a tool built for re-encoding.

It will not cut a commercial out of the middle. That is invert and segments on Video cutter. It will not host the Windows file on this site. Files stay on GitHub. Softonic and CNET wrappers are skip list items, same as on home.

Export, then check the picture

Export writes a new file. Keep the original. Name templates can include times. For a crop-only pass you may still want a clear name so you know which export has the tighter frame. Open the result in a player you trust. Check the edges. If black bars remain, crop more and export again. If the picture looks too tight, loosen the edges and export again.

Working directory defaults near the source. Set a folder if you want exports somewhere else. Separate files versus merge cuts matter more when you have several time segments. For a single crop on one open file, you usually export once and stop. Rotation metadata is a different control. Do not rotate because you meant to crop a sidebar.
